Summer Palace Winter

In the 1980's, I was a teacher in Beijing. After a rare overnight snowfall, I rode my bicycle an hour to the western part of the city. The lake ice and rooftops of the Historic Summer Palace Park were still covered with snow and fog lingered. Only a few hearty souls were wandering the grounds. As the snow started melting from the trees, I counted my lucky stars that I could find such solitude in a city of millions.
